Title: There could just be an AXN maiden this afternoon!
Post by: SnoozeDoggyDog on October 12, 2016, 10:52:06 AM
Hi
What a Biatch the floater is to put together. It lulls one into a false sense of security. It then bites your hands of right at the end when trying to glue the rod to the second wing and insert both wings into the fuse while trying to pull the y harness into the body ... Simultaneously while everything is covered in glue.

It was a battle between man and EPO which ended at about 23:10 last night, me covered in glue and the AXN having a bang on CG despite having a 2900 3s in the nose.

I hope to maiden after work. Can anyone advise how long a 2900mah will roughly last with sedate flying please? How will I know the battery is getting low? Just slow motor and input response?

Thanks
Phil

Told you to buy one of those £2 battery alarms :)

Make sure your control surfaces are going the correct way. Double and triple check.

Hi Phil,

I use a 2200 3S, and can usually get around 15 mins without risking Lipo damage.
Of course, it depends how you use the throttle etc.....Dont use the prop in the kit, its too small, the motor is actually very good though....6x 4 is what I use, much better.

I had to glue in a big steel bolt to the end of the Fuz to get the C of G...I do have a Mobius FPV Camera right on the nose though......Is yours really correct...?....Check it.

Have fun...:)

:vulture:
C of G is very important on this plane.

This x 10.  I didn't find out my ailerons were reversed until I'd chucked it into the ground 10 times.

Just in case you're confused.

Stand BEHIND the plane.

Push RIGHT on the aileron stick:
RIGHT aileron will come UP, LEFT aileron will go DOWN.

Push LEFT on the aileron stick:
LEFT aileron will come UP, RIGHT aileron will go DOWN.

Push RIGHT on the Rudder stick:
Rudder will go RIGHT

Push LEFT on the Rudder stick:
Rudder will go LEFT

Pull BACK on the elevator stick, elevator will go UP
Push FORWARD on the elevator stick, elevator will go DOWN

If all checks out, all good :)

Well online I read that the CG is on the spar? Mine is bang on the spar ... but I don't have the Möbius mounted  :'(

I'll buy a different prop, I only have the stock for the maiden though. Thanks for the advice.

Get into the habit of checking them before every flight and not just with a new plane.  They won't usually change on their own but if you don't do this at some point sooner or later you will have been messing with some settings the night before in your radio or flight controller and forgotten and then you'll try and take off with them reversed.

Yes, and launch with 60 percent throttle.Only......even when trimmed right the throttle can push it into the floor right after launch until the speed builds up.
You need a well balanced 6 x 4 decent prop to get the best out of it....Mine climbs like a homesick angel on a decent new Lipo....
Having the CG right at launch helps no end, and if its even a bit nose heavy, it wont fly very well....Dont be afraid to add a little Tail weight and try it until it fells good. Having it nose heavy is a common mistake.

It will fly on the 5 inch prop...Having flown the crap out of mine, I can tell you that I launch using a Javelin type throw action, ie, slighty upwards always....As I said, the power tries to push it into the ground at launch time....Dont launch it level....and certainly not downwards....Its the opposite of what you should normally do I know, but on this plane it works well....:)

Some more things to be aware of :

Make sure the moulded on writing on the prop is on the forward face. The prop will still produce thrust if it is reversed, just no so much.

Carry out a control surface test as already posted, but under full throttle. Make sure your head and body are not in line with the prop disc and hold on tight.

Do not use full throttle for take-off. I find that the AXN has quite severe torque roll at take-off. Use about 2/3rd throttle and a good strong throw. (I see that English Turbines just beat me to this point about throttle setting. Worth emphasising though.)

In straight and level flight the AXN has a strong tendency to descend if full throttle is applied suddenly from part throttle. This is due to the downthrust angle. Just be aware of it but don't panic.

Trim the model as soon as it is high enough to safely do this. There is nothing worse than having to fight with the model throughout the flight.

If possible try some low speed flight to find out how the model performs near to a stall but without inducing a proper stall. Do this at a height where recovery is possible.

The use of full throttle will help identify problems caused by any of the moving parts being unbalanced or the motor being loose and thus sending vibrations through the airframe, for example loose connections, unsecured servos or dry joints in the electronics.

There certainly nothing lose or any moving parts ... everything is covered in glue .... The AXN is a throw glider only since last night!

A typical example of a moving part would be a motor and covering everything with glue has a certain inhibiting effect on control linkages.
A glider you say? Certainly not apparent from your earlier postings.

What happend, easy. I forgot to order a flight stabilizer! To be fair is was a bit windy and I was completely in a false sense of security. I expected it to level out more than I expected when I let the right stick centre. It's like its acro mode compared to a quad. The e15 obviously has a stabiliser but I wasn't prepared for the AXN not to level in some way. Or maybe a combination of wind and being a bit overwhelmed just tipped my me over the edge.

Is there much damage? it looks OK?

take the camera off so she crashes more lightly next time.

glue with hot glue easy :)

don't get a flight stabiliser. learn properly. maybe practice on the trainer a bit more first and when you get the axn out again stay a couple of mistakes high and stay close so you don't lose orientation!

Good job it wasn't  £200 of loaded skywalker ;)

Okay not the end of the world, a bit of glue if she's damaged (doesn't look like it) and she'll be reet - it's a right of passage anyway :)

First mistake was you didn't get any altitude, so any mistakes = into the dirt immediately. Also it makes it difficult to see what the plane is doing, by the time it went in you mustn't have had much of a view of the plane (they get small quickly!).
Second, it sounded windy which is going to make things more difficult especially with a light model such as the AXN so wit for a calmer day?

Did you launch INTO the wind as opposed to WITH it? If not you'll have problems.

It sounded like your fingers got a bit confused with the throttle ... my advice would be to:

Set say, 75% throttle and leave it there then just concentrate on the "control" aspect of things.
Get some altitude (gently so you don't stall the plane)
Just try to let the plane do its thing with you steering it along the way - what I mean by that is don't worry about every little gust of wind, just watch how the plane reacts and correct for it once she's up there.
Try to do circuits one way first... then do it another way ... then try a figure of 8.

On the plus side, the plane looked like it was balanced well so your CoG was okay :)

Like I say - glue her up, get some altitude next time and just use gentle movements on the stick. Maybe dial your throws back a little bit so instead of 100% rate you have 50%.

It's about this point where most will either stick with the hobby or think "sod it" :)

And! If I'm not mistaken you actually landed before you crashed so that counts as a flight :D

The AXN has Ailerons, but they are pretty useless due to the wing section...I fly Mode 1, so sometimes I just set the throttle to cruise and fly around using the left stick only ie Rudder and elevator...The Rudder by comparison is very sensitive, the smallest movement and the plane reacts immediately.
It looked like it didnt want to climb out without some addition of elevator...thats normal, like I said, the thrustline pushes it towards the ground until speed builds....
Stay with it...its an easy model to fly really......You dont need a stabiliser.

Trees + wind = turbulence. That was not a good place or time for a maiden flight. I recently flew at a tight tree lined site with my Twinstar which can cope with damn near anything and it is a model which I have flown for years. However I found that the turbulence was chucking it all over the place and it was a fight to bring it under some semblance of control.
I would also echo English Turbines regarding the ailerons. I mix ailerons and rudder for my AXN.

+1 on that, I had 50% rudder mixed to my ailerons and it transformed the plane. Forgot about that!

Sorry guys, short reply for the time being. I've Not shut off from work since being home after the "maiden". It's great you're all chipping in. There's a real sense on community here. Thanks.

Take off was into the wind, she was balanced peachy. Very easy to get in the air with very little throttle. I agree I needed more altitude but I figured the more I go up the worst the wind, but yeh, I get the whole altitude gives you breathing space but not in the conditions and lack of experience I was dealing with. No damage that needs glueing. The front is just a  little bit less of a snug fit for the 2900 3s, nothing velcro won't fix. At least I blazed a trail ... a 2900 3s does fit and balances sweet, well it did for 1 flight ;)

Most of the flight was into the wind until I used the ailerons to turn left, I think at that point the wind presented  under the belly and that's where it went wrong

The newly ploughed and tilled field helped with the "landing" no end.

Great tip of just setting the throttle and using right stick to fly. I. No more flying in winds anymore for a good while. I'll be back out when conditions are right for sure.

Billy: Yep, for sure it's not a fully packed SW. Best advice I've had.

I'll add more tomorrow. I need to switch my brain off for a while.  I'm apprehensive for the next flight and I'll turn down the rates.

I really appreciate all of your comments.

The AXN like all small light models is affected by turbulence.....Its always worse lower down as the air spills over trees and hedges....Launch and get high quick if its windy...How bad it is depends upon whats upwind of your launch site on the ground.

Sure you will be ok next time out...:)

Definitely agree ... the air is MUCH smoother higher up especially if it's blowing off trees etc.

Sometimes you can launch into gusty winds and have the calmest flight ever 500ft ... er, 400ft up.

Making me miss my AXN - this was my first one, fitted with a Cyclops CE-OSD and a pan servo with the worlds poorest FPV camera :)

! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMOahJI4u-k#)

Great fun - I remember the lipo being slightly warm after this flight despite the temperatures lol 107km/h max on 3s battery heh :D

Man, my FPV has gone backwards and boring instead of better.

No, thats way too much I suspect....it depends how much Rudder movement you have, but as I said, if I just breathe on my Rudder it will respond immediately.
I would suggest you mix in just 20 percent Rudder and try it....The ailerons on the AXN are very mushy, especially around neutral...In fact mine is trimmed to cruise straight using Rudder trim only because the Ailerons dont do a lot if you throw trim on them...

Good luck....:)

I never use rates or Expo, I like a more linear response and usually set my models up with a bit more throw than I need...Its just a personal preference, yours may be different.
Dont be afraid of movement on your Ailerons though, as I said, they are not very responsive.
You may well find yourself trimming the AXN on the Rudder only....Be aware, of the motor thrust line though and the trim change if you open the throttle fully.
I trim mine to cruise around 50 percent throttle, as flying FPV is comfortable at this speed...expect the trim to change with throttle movement.
When you start flying FPV regularly, you will notice how sensitive the Rudder is, even just a few trim clicks on it will show up in the Cameras view... ( which is a good thing)....:)
Next time out, chuck it up a bit and get on the elevator to gain height, keeping the wings level...LOS of course to begin with...:)

I've turned the elevator curve down a bit as any movement on the ailerons is causing the elevator to move. Gotta say, the ailerons on my AXN have a fair bit of travel. I've got the control rods in the middle hole ... As per xjet's build series.

After my maiden crash yesterday I decided to check the geometry of the rudder. It seems theres about 3 degrees of movement  more to one side. Im taking a guess here that id better check the servo horn many moved.

Why would your Ailerons moving also affect your Elevator? Do you have them mixed together..?

I would not worry unduly about your Rudder movement, just be aware, it does not need a lot at all, say 6mm throw each way.

P

Why would your Ailerons moving also affect your Elevator? Do you have them mixed together..?

I would not worry unduly about your Rudder movement, just be aware, it does not need a lot at all, say 6mm throw each way.

                                    :vulture:
I think the elevator is moving slightly because any tiny movement above or below the centre line of the right stick is  sensitive to the elevator ... of that makes sense.

I'll keep an eye on how much rudder is needed. That's great advice. Thank you. I've also mixed in 20% rudder.

I've checked CG again. All good to go .... when there isn't any wind!

Thanks for all of your replies.

20% rudder as already posted is about right.
Some transmitters allow you to alter the spring tension on the sticks which helps with inadvertent movement on the wrong axis. I have also seen a rubber band mod for the seriously heavy handed.

Just a couple of random thoughts...
Make sure your aileron - rudder mix is working the correct direction - right stick = right aileron up = rudder to the right.
If your elevator seems sensitive to tiny movement at mid stick, make sure your expo is working as you want....Spektrum uses positive expo to mean 'softer' in the middle, but I believe some radio manufacturers use negative expo to mean this...
Good luck !

Not sure if it's already been mentioned but a few hours on a sim is well worth it.  Nothing in that video suggested to me that there was anything too badly wrong with the plane, you just made several mistakes which is more or less inevitable when you're learning.  But a sim lets you get all these mistakes out of the way and learn the correct reflexes without wasted trips and trashed airframes.

Well fight number 2 lasted for all of 10 seconds but I did manage more control. It ended badly with a snapped tail, cracked nose, snapped servo wires. It's fixed now. I've relocated the esc to the exterior in front of the motor I've cut a hatch in the belly and placed the receiver there with all the servo wires. This leaves the "cockpit" less cluttered. CG is good but wasn't an issue anyway.

I think I'm going to take off the 20% rudder to aileron mix so I know half of what to expect when I use the sticks. I think turning down the sensitivity of the sticks might be an idea

20s jeez what are you doing?! You said you flew mini quads a lot they are just as difficult IME.

Imo you need to get to a flying club and have someone buddy box with you. or find someone on here.
Title: Re: There could just be an AXN maiden this afternoon!
Post by: SnoozeDoggyDog on October 25, 2016, 06:14:09 PM
I was advised to mix rudder in. I've taken the mix off now.

I can't go to a club mate, I can't make that type of commitment. I'll get it eventually, today was my 2nd flight without stability backing me up. I'll turn down the inputs and have another stab.

I've got the axn in bits again after fixing it. I'm rerouting the motor wiring, rx, esc and cutting a hatch in the belly.

It's all a learning experience for sure. But 20s?

Programme dual rates and maybe a bit of expo. That way if she's too twitchy you can flick to lower rates and see if that helps.

I flew my axn almost entirely with ailerons don't see why people feel the rudder is so vital.

Turning up to a flying club once or twice really isn't that much of a commitment. If someone's nice they will buddy box with you and you can probably have about half an hour in the air with them. In that time they will save your skin about 5-10 times after which you can fly alone and get better alone.

What trouble are you actually having that's causing you to crash? Are you putting in too much input, or too little orthe same as your earlier video?
Title: Re: There could just be an AXN maiden this afternoon!
Post by: electrotor on October 25, 2016, 10:22:24 PM
The tendency is for newbies to over control, then over control the other way to compensate and they get into a vicious circle. Then within seconds it all stops abruptly courtesy of terra firma. This sounds like what is happening. Stability would dampen this but not really teach you how to fly.
My AXN flew like an oven ready turkey until I mixed in rudder.
I think you really need hands-on help.
Title: Re: There could just be an AXN maiden this afternoon!
Post by: FPVSteve on October 26, 2016, 01:03:06 AM
Dial the throws back and put some expo in (if you can) so that it's not so abrupt and twitchy. You really don't need loads of movement on the control surfaces to make it turn (nor do you want it to turn quickly at this stage). Maybe 5mm up and down from center max.

Put the rudder mix back in, it'll make it handle better (and give you more turning authority if you do the above).

Then fly it on a fairly calm day.

GET ALTITUDE! before you try to turn :) And keep the airspeed up.

OK, it looks like I need to sort out my rates and expos. When I use ailerons the axn goes almost knife edge and sort of goes into a curving dive, that's what is causing me the most problems. Looking at the ailerons on the ground under input the travel is about 2cm in both directions so I highly suspect that's part of my problem. I did intend to film my 2nd flight yesterday but was short on time and forgot my gopro.

I'm hopeful the next flight will go better. For dual rates do you think 25% is a good place to start?

Thanks for all the help

Yep those throws are way too high.

You can move the control rods. On the servo end move the rod to a hole closer to the servo. On the control surface end move the rod to a hole further away from the surface.

When you have your throws down to about 10mm each way you can set up dual rates at about 60-70% on a switch. It may not sound like much but it will make a difference.

Now try to set up some expo. 30% should be OK.

If you are not sure how to set up your radio just search on youtube. There are hundreds of tutorials for just about every radio there is.

Like Steve said try and launch in an area where you can get some height without have to turn too much. Height is your friend. Not too heigh though.

Take it slow. Just try circling overhead left hand circuits then right hand circuits. You will probably find you will prefer one way more than the other.

Keep with it. I gave up loads of times but am now getting on OK. I do cheat though with an AP for stabilisation.

Mark.

Thanks Mark. I'll give those tips a try. I followed Bruces xjet youtube axn build to the letter including his servo horn recommendations, which are clearly to much for me.

It's shitty weather for the next couple of days so I won't get out. But my axn is stripped anyway so needs rebuilding.

Thanks for your help.

The AXN Cloud appears under another name - BMI Arrow. The manual is a whole lot better than the one I got with my AXN but unfortunately will not upload despite being a pdf and under the max. file size. I have extracted the relevant part on control throws. However this indicates throws which are twice that of another similar manual I have. It's puzzling.

i think if the OP is using stock control rods/horns etc its throws are unlikely to be way off.

So IMO he just needs a throw test to check trim and CG and then a buddy box flight.
Title: Re: There could just be an AXN maiden this afternoon!

It flies fine, he just can't control it :)

He says the throws are large which will be compounding the problem so dialling them back is step 1, then he won't suffer from the "pendulum" effect of overcorrecting back and forth while he gets used to the plane.

CG has been bang on, that's one thing I am sure about. I'll give it a throw test next time I'm out, but to be fair it's had lots of "throws" due to unsuccessful "take offs"  :(. But in essence Steve has described things as they are.

I've set up dual rates on the X9D down to 65% and expo to 25% but the expo figure might change on some further research. I do think this has been my issue. I feel a bit of a tit not having picked up on it. It's clear to see on the e15 that in the various modes the rates are dialed down.

Cheers

May I suggest something else that I don't think has already been said:-

Please look at the control rods that go from the servos to the ailerons on the wing - look at the holes the rods are connected to - they should be - at the servo, one or two holes in from the outermost - at the aileron horn, in the outermost hole. Check the holes are the same on both sides of the wing.
Check the same holes are used on the servo / elevator and servo / rudder.

If you are using different holes to the above - let us know, before changing them

At the servo end the rods are connected to the 2nd hole in which had to be drilled to 2mm. This is the same for all servos.  At the control surface end: The, rud is in the middle hole, ele is in the middle hole, ail is attached as close to the surface as possible.

Right, your settings will probably be making the plane somewhat 'twitchy' - especially the ailerons. I suggest on all your control surfaces you move the control horn end (not servo end) out to the outermost holes. This will reduce the amount of throw and 'slow' the movements down a bit.
After moving the rod holes, Remove the propeller - switch on Tx and then the plane - with the Tx sticks all centralised and tx subtrims are centralised, check the control surfaces are all 'flat', i.e. centralised. If not, remove linkage at the horn and screw in or out the clevis at the end of the rod until surface is 'flat'.

Trust me - this will make the plane 'easier'. Before flying again test throw the plane (gently) at head height straight forward - it should just gently glide down to the ground approx. 3 or 4 metres ahead of you. If it tries to turn / climb - one of your control rods may be still badly adjusted or the C of G is wrongly set.
PS correct c of g is the most important setting for correct 'easy' flight.

WG: unfortunately the way the axn is designed I'm unable to move the control rods from from where they are in the rud and ele once installed. Unless I go to work on them with snips and hot glue. Therefore I've moved the aileron control rods to the middle setting, the same as the rud and ele. So I'm dealing with the same all round.

Thank you

It really doesn't matter which hole they're in because you're aiming for a small amount of movement which you can control using the computerised radio you have in your hands, so don't worry about it.

As long as the ailerons are using the same holes as one another it'll be reet. Just dial them down a tad. Same with the elevator, you really don't need much - too much will cause it to pitch wildly and stall if your airspeed isn't high enough.

Long story English. I dicked about with the x9d for a few days so thought I'd factory reset. To cut that story short I thought I'd tweak the default model. Strange problems persisted in as much that no matter what I changed channels 3 and 4 were rudd and ele and the on screen GUI was showing both sticks full right, despite having calibrated. Anyway it's sorted now. I set up a new model on the tx and all is well. Strange that even setting up a model on the companion using wizard still caused the same problems.

Go steady.
Don't be afraid of altitude.
Get your bearings in the goggles so you know which way is 'home'. Look at the shape of the fields below and make a map in your head.
Don't over react to little wobbles - let the plane fly in the (moving) air - don't try to correct everything.
Fly around gently, and see where that strange person on the ground is, and keep his position in mind.
Then land toward him , into the wind.
You will love it when u get it.
