Frsky Taranis Thread

I got my dispatch notification yesterday, nothing arrived today tho. Technically, it's for my son (aged 12) but dad will have to check it out first ;)

For those of you lucky enough to have had one for a few weeks, what do you think so far?

I like it a lot. So far met my high expectations. Need to play more with telemetry.

I hear the speaker sucks, you can upgrade it though but some people are saying the first "recommended" upgrade speaker actually pop`s after a few hours, not good lol

I also heard about the buzz through the speaker, sounds like an easy fix though, a few folds of foil, then wrapped in Sellotape to insulate it placed behind the speaker solves it apparently

It feels a bit 'light' after a futaba but the total flexibility and programing opportunities soon had me forgetting that! The speaker is utter junk but plug in some ear buds and the quality is great so no biggie!. Its easy to bind I like that over the module and model match is a nice addition.

I like the layout of the switches etc but the side sliders feel 'cheap' and have me wondering how long they will last...time will tell. I have it announcing all naza modes when switched 'gps - atti - manual' which is great if ur under the goggles!!, I also have it read the timer out to me when I flick the trainer switch, being a new user to open source I'm finding it nice and intuitive and a simple follow your nose approach works well!

I grabbed the lipo linked a few pages back and it fits with room to spare so can recommend that, all in all happy so far:)

Well my lads Taranis arrived today from T9 so I started looking at the programming. Using a FF9 myself it is quite different and I can see it is fantastically powerful with all those custom switches and flexible mixes/flight modes etc. Quite how a twelve year old would cope with it I'm not sure.

So far I have managed to get my head around dual rates and throttle cut using the Companion software. Thats about as complex as I get on most of my models other than the basic aileron/elevator/elevon setups.

Having played with the Taranis for an evening I'm quite impressed with it. Physical quality is better than the 9XR I sent back and up to what I expected for the money. It's not a Futaba or JR, but then I wouldn't expect it to be.

As mentioned before, it's for my young lad as his first tx and I currently use an FF9. Once you get your head around the concept of how the setup works you realise how flexible it could be tho I can't think of anytime in the past decade/dozens and dozens and dozens of models that would require anything other than what my current FF9 does (2channel gliders to multi-servo 40% aerobats) so I do wonder if the complication of the flexibility is a bit overkill for 99.9% of the stuff anyone is likely to fly. There will be exceptions I'm sure, and maybe it's more a question of 'now that I can do xyz I didn't realise I was missing it before' ? The companion software makes it much easier to get to grips with setting up models and I'm sure once we are more familiar with the process and options, doing this from scratch for a new model directly on the tx won't be a problem. You can always set yourself up a few templates for common configurations.

The only downside is that with him being a twelve year old, once he worked out how to assign various 'speech' alerts to all the buttons and trims, I think I'm going to tire very quickly of the repeated "high rates selected", "low rates selected", "high rates selected", "trim centred" as he sits there fiddling with it!


Overall, very pleased with it so far and worth the wait.

So how would you power it with a 3S ?  Whilst I have a few 2S lipo's I could also use, I'm thinking about if I need to give an external module 9v+, and I have a few 3S liFe batteries that are pretty ideal.  Is it a case of making up a lead so you'd use the 2S balance plug.  What's that other power input for ?

The other connector in the battery compartment is a serial port.
I believe it might be for updating the RF module but that is just a guess on my part.

Nobody seems to have any stock in at the moment.
I wouldn't buy from Giant Shark though if I were you, If you have a problem you're certain to regret ever giving them your money, I speak from experience.
I still hav'nt received my money back from Giantshark, they know they have to refund me in the end but they think it's funny giving me the runaround, wish I had paid by paypal instead of Sagepay.

T9 on the the other hand have been really great, I'd recommend them any day.

Just goes to show that people experiences may vary.  I've always had great service from GiantShark - on the one occasion they managed to leave something out of a parcel once, 1 email and they sent it over straight away.

T9 seemed to promise a lot, but really didn't come through with their promised stock quickly enough for me.  I was on the waiting list forever, and finally got an email allowing me to pre-order after I had my Taranis for a week from GS

Well I don't think it's quite the same situation, if you paid for an item and they refused to send it they would be stealing from you so they really did have to send that item out to you.
I'm pretty sure even Giant Shark aren't out to steal from people.

I've also had good customer service from Giant Shark in the past but lately it seems they have fully embraced the the Hobbyking model for customer service, ie. no customer service.
On your invoice it says 'any problems please ring this number xxxx xxxxxx' but if you do ring up with a problem they will tell you they don't deal with problems on that number they only take phone orders, you need to use the web form where every reply takes 48 hours.
I have no doubt it will get sorted out in the end but I do wonder why they are doing this to their good customers, what are the benefits for them playing the long game, maybe they are short staffed?

Regarding T9, I ordered an X8R receiver from them which arrived in good condition and very quickly but they failed to send it by recorded delivery which I did specify.

When I queried it with them Dave apologised and said I could choose something from their website and they would send it to me.
I didn't really know what to choose and wasn't really that bothered so I replied saying there was really no need and it didn't really matter that much but if he really wanted to send me something a spare Frsky antenna (£1.49) wouldn't go amiss, his reply was' I think we can do a bit better than that ; )'
The next day a new X8R receiver came through the door.
I am a bit humbled by that and it was a lot more than they needed to do but I am now a very loyal customer, and I know they do value their customers.
