What are you using to get out that low? 1.3 + antenna tracking?

Looks good dp, I saw the picture of it on the FB page and it looks awesome in black.

I had my third FPV flight yesterday... and the final one too unfortunately.

I finally sorted my VTx so it had a full 100mW output. So time for a bit of distance. Got out to 1km and the thing locked out. Oh crap, set the Chainlink to high power mode and held the Tx up and got it back, so I turned around. I was about 1500ft at this point so I figured I may as well make the most of the flight and get some altitude. So I climbed up to about 2500ft at which point it locked out again. Because I'm a total retard, I hadn't set up failsafe. As such, the failsafe was full throttle and neutral elevons, the precise control inputs for a full throttle nose dive. Like, a perfect dive. From 2500ft all the way to the ground and I had perfect video all the way down...

The plus side is that I knew exactly where it was. The downside is that it's totally buggered. One lipo was totally crushed and the other caught fire. My beloved WDR700 was first crushed by the impact, then cooked by the fire... The other electronics seem just fine and the outer wing panels are OK at least. I can't afford to get a new one for a little while as this has been draining my income for the past few weeks (hey Rob, fancy giving me a new kit with the Xiaomi Yi mount for further crash testing?  ;D) but I should be able to knock something else up to do FPV on. The side wall of the fuselage had to be pulled out of the ground with both hands.

Certainly my most impressive crash so far, ironically my new Xiaomi Yi arrived today so it missed the action, and I have no DVR at the moment so no crash footage :(

I retract what I said earlier about Chainlink Dare being fine, it's total crap it seems so I'll go over to openLRS when I can afford it.

Oh my. Sorry man, it's heartbreaking to see such a well built plane go like that.

Whilst it's probably possible to salvage the wings and get a new box from Rob, I'm sure you'll not be satisfied with the result.

Yeah, OpenLRS rocks and I'd definitely recommend the DTF-UHF.

Sheldon sorry for your loss. Just Be thankful it didn't go in on a building or road.  I would have a look at Rlink UHF which is very solid and easy to program.

This is something I considered. I could even just build a new centre section, plenty of ply here and the foam underside piece is intact somehow. Issue is that the port side wing is quite badly damaged and melted from the fire.

Now that I think about it more, that isn't such a bad idea... I just have to cut away the melted part and hotwire a new piece to go in there. Then I can remove the splintered spar and install a new one and do a new centre section. Will be a lot less work that building a new one.

Nah, just the standard Chainlink Dare receiver antennas. It has a diversity receiver but obviously still doesn't work very well lol.

Yeah, that could have been an issue. Luckily where I fly there is very little to hit, so it's not a huge issue.

I'm on 2.4 and ipeel is on 1.3

Do you need to use antenna trackers or can you get away without it? Really don't want a groundstation that's too complicated.

Brucey has a tracker of sorts, Chris! He gets on fine with a yagi on a fixed tripod and occasionally Chris nudges the antenna in the right direction.

At that site a tracker isn't that necessary as we're generally within a 90 degree field of view, I have one because a flight doesn't feel right unless I've been clonked on the head by my helical when the tracker gets a fix for the first time.

That site is truly great for low level flying and there's plenty of places to visit, here's one out to the windfarm again at pretty low level coming back:

Yeah as ipeel said I don't use one, I try and plan the flight, if I'm staying within 2km then I'll stay on omni's, if we have a target I'll stick the yagi on, but rarely have to move it. Remember the flyable 'cone' of gain gets larger the further away you are.
iPeel, once he's been smacked in the head by his helical, can fly wherever whenever.
