Not far off lol... Glad I wasn't around when the lipo went up.

Currently looking at UHF systems. I've had my eye on the OrangeRx UHF system for a while as it's so darn cheap. I'd really like to get the DTF system or Rlink but the OrangeRx one is just so darn cheap... Unless there's any second hand deals around that is? I don't want to be spending much over £100 so my options are super limited, I know.

Note that I'd be fine with hacking the firmware on the Orange system which is necessary I hear as the firmware is a bit crap as standard with low servo resolution.

Personally I would save for the DTF, it's much better and you've just lost one plane to a second rate system. Multirotorsuperstore stock it and deliver to the UK in less than a week, their after sales support is exceptional. I think a TX and RX together can be delivered for close to your £100 budget.

OK. I'll get the DTF system. I can't use the JR module in my 10C so I'd need the separate transmitter, but that's no problem. I'm just looking at receivers, what is the purpose of the "1 watt" receiver? I can't see any extra features over the standard MiniRx 8 channel one?

The 1 watt RX is a 1 watt TX instead of 100mw for telemetry, not required. One option for the RX is the Brotronics one which has a 1s lipo conditioner for powering the beacon on a battery out scenario, in future I'm buying those but I have not got one yet. I do know it has a decent filter.

By the look of it,  Sheldon won't need the beacon,  he can just look for the mushroom cloud rising from the crater!

I see, so it uses the RFM-23BP instead of the RFM-22B for the receiver module, or at least that's what I'm assuming. Makes sense, though not required for me as you say.

I see the Brotronics one, the beacon is a good idea. Out of stock though at the moment. Is the beacon possible to do on any of the receivers in firmware? If so that's no problem as I could just use a 1S Lipo anyway and make a board to boost the voltage and charge the battery when it's not in use.

Currently I'm thinking of the 1W Tx, the 8 channel MiniRx receiver and the Diamond SRH-771 Tx antenna. I'd then make a suitable dipole for the receiver, I have the equipment to tune it properly too. How does that sound?

It was still smouldering when I found it. Bit of a shame, my first unintentional lipo fire and I wasn't even around to witness it :(

That reminds me, I must go and retrieve the remains of the lipos. I didn't bring them back as I had no suitable container but not the best idea to leave them there.

Yes they all support the beacon, just the Brotronics has the conditioner. As you say this can be retrofitted to any RX.

Your suggestion on the setup is exactly what I run, the diamond on the TX and a home made flexible dipole on the RX. Note I use the box version even though I have a radio with a jr module. I've ran the modules off both 2s and 3s with no change in performance.

Just been watching some of this.. If I'm reading your OSD right you're pulling nearly 20a for a lot of that and you mah used is just creeping up??  Pretty sure mine would be going up a lot quicker than that?!

So couple more questions if I may...

I seem to remember reading a post at one point about the thrust angle.  It seems like it might be a bit off to me?  I trimmed it out on the initial los maiden and all was fine.  I've noticed now though if I try and glide it will drop the nose pretty rapidly.  Anyone else experience this?  Should I just trim it with less throttle on and accept its going to climb rapidly under throttle?

Other question... Why doesn't anyone go with a single battery?  Sticking a larger single battery would mean less to recharge after a flight and cheaper for me to purchase.. :)  About £75 for 4 x 3300 4s batteries but £50 for two 5000s or £60 for two 5800s

I know what you mean about the motor angle, I have the same thing, but haven't got round to changing it. I've just trimmed it for cruise with the thinking that the only time the motor will be off is when landing.
Wings will always climb as the speed builds because of the reflex they need. I've also thought about making a mix to add down elevator as the throttle increases, just not got round to doing either..... babies.... jeez!

My mount is bent back by just over a degree from 90 giving a slight downward thrust and I'm happy with it. My motor mount is on the top of the wooden plate whereas Brucey mounted his underneath to lower the thrust line a little.

The two batteries thing came from the old Venturi when you had to use two to get them in the thick part of the wing camber on each side. You could use a single battery if you want but I liked having a common set of batteries and the ability to draw a lot of current across two batteries rather than stress a single battery.

There was a surprising amount of wind that day and it was quite gusty so I've no idea what was going on, certainly I used more juice on that run than I recall doing on the same course previously with Brucey. The Mah consumed climb must tally with the current consumption as they are driven from the same data and in natterings with Brucey on long flights we're usually within a few hundred Mah of each other. He gives his batteries a little rub and a cup of cocoa when he gets back, mine don't get as good-a life.
