Multiplex Fox FPV bulid

Hi all
this weekend I disided to build a quick FPV, to have a break from my big project.

first of the platform, I went for the Fox by Multiplex, a small free flight glider, weighing in at 45g.



remove the 9g Bering from beneath the canopy, taking the plane down to 36g



cut a hole in the wing for the aileron servo



slid the wing in and mark around the servo to cut a hole for the servo to fit



cut a compartment in the fuselage for the rc kit




fit the servo for the elevator and feed the wires to the fuselage compartment



mark out the wings for ailerons



stiffen the wing with a carbon tube



I laser ed out some small servo horns from ABS plastic



then fitted them to the wings



same proses for the elevator tail wing, I used a small length of piano wire to connect the to elevator flaps



a length of piano wire is used for controlling the elevator, ther is a small loop in the wire so I can make fin adjustment to the trim if necessary



I have used a spectrum 6 Chanel receiver, that ways in at 2g, I have hollowed out the front of the fuselage for the flight battery



the motor mount is laser cut from 3mm plywood, and the motor is an AP05 giving 100+ grams of thrust from a 2 cell lipo



the fpv kit is ran from a single cell and weighs in at 11g withe the battery



I fitted a mini servo to rotate the camera and cut a slot in the top of the canopy to holed the video transmitter, all the wires are fed to the canopy core



I have fitted the battery for running, the FPV kit in the side of the canopy for quick change



that's it, all done, the complete flying weight is exactly 100g, I will test it the next time the wined behaves

I made a 'big wing' Fox (cut up part of a second wing and added it to the original).
They really like to fly fast!

great vid Nigel, tuff little things aren't they.
Do you no where the c/g is on this plane, as a hand glider, its ruffly in the middle of the wing, I have aimed for it 1/3 back from the leading edge, I can change this with the flight pack.
I was a little concerned with a wing mounted motor, mossed of the conversions I have looked at on you tube, have fitted them to the front of the fuselage, the motor has got some push to it, when I holed it and power it up it wants to dive into a forward roll, I'm expect wont's some air is passing over the wings giving lift it will be fine.
I built it to have a short rang FPV that I can yous in the parks her in London.
Longer rang I will have to travel outside the city, I wont to be able to fit this in a case, and jump on the tube with it.
it will be a great little bird to leave in the boot of the car, for FPV emergences.

Hi guys, can you advise
I have been looking at more examples of this conversation and here a lot of talk about thrust angle, on wing mounted versions,  place motor angled down, do they mean the motor facing the sky and blowing down or the motor tilting forward and the air blowing up, I would hate for it to nos dive or flip on its maiden and damage the video gear, the video transmitter comes from Turkey and would tack some time to replace..

looking at most other high motor pushers they have the air blowing up, so the motor shaft is angled up.

Well just as i didn't think it was possible along came Gordon to prove me wrong  :)

Its amazing little plane gordon not too sure if i would maiden with the gear on or mock it up first ?

thanks Steve, I looked at more of the same builds and thay all have the motor set the way you suggest, so I have adjusted the motor accordingly.

I no what you mean Dave, good idea, I think I will tack of the canopy, and stick some cones on to mack up the weight. It was a lot of fun converting it, I recommend giving it a go, this is a short rang 2.4ghz version, if it goes well I may build a 35 mhz version, with a bit more reach.

more help and advice needed
Well she had her maden this morning, before I went I adjusted the motor to face down, as suggested and removed the camera pod.
I have videoed it, but it is on my gopro and needs to me comprised before I send it.
I powered it up and launched it, and it went great for 2 seconds, the C/G seemed fine, but I forgot to turn on the video, so I bought it strait down, before I tried any maneuvers,
when I tried again I launched it at just over half throttle, it was all over the place and crashed, I tried it at full throttle and gave it a good hared chuck, and away she went, and is pretty stable, it seems to wont to fly at full throttle, els it misbehaves, it will fly once its going at 3/4 throttle but it seems a bit unpredictable,
when I dropped the throttle to land it glides beautiful, very strang. it also seems to bee a little underpowered for the amount of thrust to weight reshow, perhaps the motor is angel two much, I will experiment when I can.
over all I'm pretty pleased with the first tests, any suggestions.

It's like I said, they like/must be flown fast else they tend to stall.
They are a bit twitchy at the best of times, but mine is entirely predictable.

I did several tweaks to mine, including reducing the angle of attack of the wing and tailplane, and making the big wings.

On my tail, I shaved a bit off the fuselage foam where the tail sits, tapering from a couple of mm at the leading edge to nothing at the trailing edge, use a really sharp blade for this.
Removed it from the bottom and glued it back on the top !!
