Thanks guys, my confidence did take a beating along with the Talon :(
Gaffer tape and gorilla glue should sort the Talon but I do need some practice before I (attempt to) take her up again. A friend has a Bixler he said I could have a go with but they look really lively and twitchy to me and don't fancy crashing someone else's plane. I went for the Talon because Id heard they where a bit more relaxed to fly.

So, any recommendations for a free sim so I can 'get my thumbs in' before I attempt another flight?
I know from the multi's there is no substitute for the real thing but I just want to get a feel for it first ;)

Bixler is much slower than the Talon in standard form. You're friend May have souped it up and they will then fly faster

FPVSteve

Yep a Bixler is a much better beginner plane

Dave

Thanks BlueFlyer ;)

Hmmm....
Might buy a Bix' then, I dont want to wreck the Talon with my pathetic atempts at flying it :+

Can't go wrong with a Bix. (sounds like a new Cereal, withabix)

My first fpv plane was a bixler 1.0
Really should of been a v0.9 lol.

If you have no autopilot for it,
Get a simple stabiliser, it'll be just like pa mode, just no rth.

Back to the thread.
I must :
A) order a new motor
B) look for one in the box of that'll be handy one day.

If its FPV stick time you need, then the Floater Jet from Hobby King takes some beating for sheer value...Its not a pure fpv plane as such, but with a small, light VTX and Camera it can provide a lot of fun and practice for very little money...Builds quicker and simpler than the Bixler, the "kit" version is about £35 right now....I needed a large steel bolt glued into the tail of mine to get the cg right....A 2200 3S lipo, the reccomended motor for it is ok...a 6 x 5 prop, the 5 inch is useless...a 30 amp ESC....Pay attention to the CG...its important to get it right...Had mine about 2 years now...still going strong...even thought about getting a new one and transferring the gear....Amazing little plane if you are learning fpv.

The AXN was my first plane and I loved it. Only got rid of it so the missus wouldn't complain about me buying yet another new one 😀

Must admit I've had a couple of AXNs and they're very nice - but limited if you want to grow. For a "throw in the car" plane though they're brilliant.

Billy_boy_2010

Loved my axn. First plane. Works well as a fpv plane too.

Billy_boy_2010

Does the axn really fly that differently to skywalkers, bixlers and easystars? :s

Perhaps the mini talon bridges the gap between plane and wing in handling characteristics, but I really dnt think the axn can be considered crap.

If anything it's a little faster and more twitchy than the skybixlers. Clip the wings and a decent motor and it's really fast.

FPVSteve

I think the key here was "cheap beginner plane" ... he's already stuffed one Talon in through no fault of his own, the AXN is a fantastic learning plane an d also more fun than a Bixler once you ramp it up a bit. It serves its purpose for sure.

FPVSteve

All he's wanting to do is learn to fly fixed wing...  not fly FPV 3km out. This is not about AXN vs Talon, it's about teaching him how to fly so he doesn't stuff the Talon any more. An AXN is better than a Bixler for this purpose because it can fly steadily but can also speed up a bit to be more on par with the Talon thus aiding progression.

Is he? Ok, then get a AXN.

Just expect to pay out again and learn how to fly a decent FPV plane when you decide you want any success in this area of the hobby

If it's being discussed in the mini talon thread then any alternative offered will be compared to the mini talon, I was trying to keep it on topic. And with the mini talon being so damn cheap right now, I still honestly think a mini talon is an acceptable option. My advice - if the target is to eventually FPV a Mini Talon - would be to buy another (or 2) mini talon at the stupidly cheap price they're at right now but don't put any FPV gear in it. learn to fly it LOS and when you've managed that, put FPV gear in it.

so he'd learn to fly a AXN.... but that won't help him find the cause of his mini talon roll issues.
Lol. I'm going to get the thread back on topic by saying you're all talking crap and then expect that to be the end of it!

Good advice to anyone starting out in fpv, just jump straight in and fly the Talon. I can see the first flights now: oh dear it's a bit twitchy I'm struggling with keeping it level - simple just put it in stabilise. Oh but I've lost orientation - thats no problem engage return to home. Oh dear it appears it may be going back to China - ok you need to fly it home manually.. But you told me I didn't need to fly the AXN?!

I've learned that the mini talon can cruise fairly fast and draw low amps at the same time. For the last few flights I've been limited to less than half my available throttle due to (hopefully) a dodgy ESC feature... It won't let me pull any more than 15 amps yet I was still able to reach 1km altitude and recover home from 3km down wind, both of which happened completely by accident because I was distracted by the view from my downward facing FPV camera lol

Mine is setup with one of these:  http://www.componentshop.co.uk/lc2835-8t-1038kv-leopard-outrunner-brushless-motor.html  running on 4s, and an 8x4 prop, which pulls about 18A full throttle.  It cruises at around 50kmh, at only 6A draw or so.  Just the ticket!  The climb out it is perfectly okay, and loops are possible with a bit of planning.  Just the ticket for cruising around, and cutting through a lot of the turbulence that a slower model would get thrown about by....

Yea and we're discussing maybe how best to ease yourself into a Talon if you're a beginner or unsure of your piloting abilities, the AXN will help while not being quite as boring as a Bixler. Its on topic as far as I can see?

Although theres nowt really more to say on the AXN lol.
