Now I'm back from  holiday and I've given my brother his motors/esc's back I'm re-equipping with MyRCMart 1804/2400's. After having a measure up I carefully filed the existing slots inwards a little:

After this pic was taken I extended the slots a bit further as it was pushing the screws out a bit, the pic makes it look worse because of the pincushion distortion of my phone camera in macro mode!

I'm using M2 x 6 screws with washers and they don't protrude into the motor.

Re the breaking arms thing, I've yet to break the green arm, but I've broken both sides of the black arm? Oddly enough the black arm is at the back (arrives second at the scene of the crash!)....maybe the green plastic is more flexible or bonds better to itself?

Sounds to me like I need to do some more crash testing. After falling in love with the Blackout which looks like a fantastic frame (but costs $149) I'll have a look to see how I can strengthen it up a bit more.

The plans for the K-Quad are now available on Thingiverse: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:299143 so if you fancy printing one out yourselves then fill your boots.

Hi Krikey, I sent you a email regarding a K Quad, but then after reading further in I see you changed your email addy, so thought I'd just post in here

So should I send a email to the new address or?

Hey Neil,
Did you get my order for a black & gold KK2 frame?

While you're printing it can you print me another black arm please..... While avoiding the bird table I backed into an overhanging bush in my mum's back garden flying FPV !
The arm broke across the step which is in line with the end of the motor mount, it might be better for the thickness to gently taper down as the motor mount area doesn't need to be so thick at the end? See second pic.

Andrew is this the motor you are using and what size of bolts are you using to bolt them to the frame?

Thanks

Welllll..... they were the motors that I fitted when I first built my K-Quad, but I don't think they're quite high enough Kv. It always hovered at above half stick even running 3 blade 5 x 3 props.
I flew it FPV and it didn't seem to lack power to arrest a descent from height, but if you see one of my earlier posts just before I went off on holiday it went in from 70~80' or so. After patching it up the front right corner didn't run, crash probably due to me frying the weedy little 5A esc's which aren't actually recomended for 3 cell use!
Helpfully my kind brother lent me the powertrain from his K-Quad which uses these:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__8140__Turnigy_2211_Brushless_Indoor_Motor_2300kv.html with 10A esc's, 2300Kv seems to be a better match and with them it hovers a touch under half throttle with 2 blade 5 x 3 Gemfan props and it certainly has some pop!
Before I went off on holiday I had already ordered some of these:
http://www.myrcmart.com/rcx-1804-2400kv-micro-outrunner-brushless-motor-anticlockwise-p-6280.html unfortunately out of stock at the moment.
And these:
http://www.myrcmart.com/rcx-1804-2400kv-micro-outrunner-brushless-motor-clockwise-p-6281.html
(The right handed ones have a left hand thread so they're self tightening)
But they were a bit slow coming and didn't arrive 'till after I'd gone. I've finally sorted fitting them and some 10A SimonK firmware esc's but I'm yet to fly it outdoors. Unfortunately the esc's from MyRCMart are too big to go in the frame so I'e had to mount them under the arms which will be a pain if (when) I snap the arms again.

For simplicity I think you would be pretty safe with the HobbyKing 2211/2300Kv motors (damn, just noticed they're on backorder too!) with Turnigy 10A esc's which are small enough to fit one above the other under the ends of the top plate. Use 3 cell 1300 or 1500mAh LiPos and 2 blade 5 x 3 props.

Apologies for the long winded reply.
Andrew
PS I used M2 x 10 screws with nuts (and threadlock!) to secure the 1811 or 2211 motors.
How OCD is that? Colour matched cable ties on the arms! (Pack from Poundland, 4 colours of nice long thin cable ties)

Hi Andrew. Just the reply I wanted.
Think I will order the  frame then get some parts sorted.
Top man thanks for  your help.
Btw I think I will go for the plush 10amp esc. They seem good. (Oh I think that's the ones you mean lol)

Sommie1974

Kirkey can you pm me please about your quad

CAndrewGreen

I think they're the esc's my brother got, I'll try and remember to ask him next time I talk to him. Buy several bags of props! The cheap Gemfan props aren't terribly strong and they get chewed up quite easily, but being light probably helps with throttle response and should save your motor shafts!
One other recomendation I forgot is to get some 2mm collet type prop adaptors from Micron RC as the grub screw ones that come with the motors aren't a very good fit.

Andrew
Don't think I posted these pics before:

Sommie1974

Thanks for that Andrew.
I plan on buying the mobuis to use as an fpv and record camera and the fat sharks predator v2 as a stating point.
I think this quad will be a very good first mini. That's the plan anyway lol

CAndrewGreen

I fly with FatShark Attitudes, don't currently have any facility for recording flights on the K-Quad.
I've read various reports about using (digital) recorders as FPV cameras and the lag that comes from the digital to analogue conversion to achieve video out, some say OK some say too laggy.
What I need to do is redesign my FPV camera mount so I can fit my Hobby King 'Wing Cam' next to it.

Andrew

Sommie1974

Yes I'm with you. I think as long as your flying in a wide open space like a field for instance it should be ok. If your flying through trees etc then I would say no. Heard a lot of people say the mobius is fine for both so
I will give it a try. If not I hope the k-quad can handle x2 cameras!  :D
