So my computer which is currently win 8.1 keeps prompting me to upgrade to Win10.
Why I am normally against upgrading something that is working well I am tempted.
then I read a post someone having trouble with connecting USD devices.
With the wide array of serial to USB connection for this hobby alone should I do it or am I going to open a can of worms and have nothing work ?

I upgraded from Windows7->10 using the in place upgrade process and it's about as smooth as any upgrade I've ever had.
I use my machine for quite a bit and have various USB devices and old sound cards plugged in for example and it all just worked with no messing around.
No problem connecting to my quad's via cleanflight or doing firmware upgrades etc...
So thumbs up from me.
I went from 8.1 to 10.
No problems with any USBs but I do have the problem of the 'dead taskbar'. Its quite uncommon apparently (which would explain why I have it :+) but is a total pain in arse! At seemingly random times (but very often) the taskbar will cease to function meaning none of the icons work, including the 'start' button. The only way to sort it that I'm aware of is to re-start windows explorer from task manager but this is only temporary.....
If you do the upgrade keep you fingers crossed you don't get it ;)

Hurry up though, the offer runs out shortly and then it's £99 for Home, £199 for Pro.

Yes you choose while upgrading wether to just upgrade or do a full system wipe / fresh install.

Yes its in the options.
I upgraded the Toshiba laptop for 7 days and then went back to 7. The reasons where: I could not get on with the way 10 looked and worked, no files or programs seemed to be in the same placers 7 and I wanted the old desk top back with the tiles. Also the processor was probably too slow for 10. My advice is do a mirror image of your PC before upgrading because During the rollback I lost many files so had to do a clean re install of 7. Following that experience I got the tablet with 10 and android on which just confirmed to me that 10 is more like a smart phone.
One big tip I can give you is you must do a recovery disc if you have 10. The reason is if you forget or lose your password or enter it incorrectly a few times you get locked out and if you don't have a recovery cd you are effectively locked out of your machine and have to do a re install. That's what happened to the tablet.
As a result of all the above I have decided that when 7 is no longer serviced by MS I will be swapping all the home and work computers over to Macs

As someone who does software development work 5 days a week with some pretty resource intensive applications, I can absolutely disagree that Windows 10 is "like a smart phone" - unless of course you've put it onto a tablet or it is running in "tablet mode" .. in which case you can switch out of it by clicking "tablet mode" in the notification bar.
Windows 10 (and to a lesser extent 8.1) was designed to be more like Windows 7 than Windows 8 because of the backlash over the UI changes. Windows 10 incorporates the Windows 8 'tile screen' into the traditional (Win7) start menu and is resizable, or full-screen selectable if you really want it so you get the best of both worlds.
must say I hated win 8 when i started using it 3 years ago stepping up from XP. Couldn't find anything everything was different. After a couple of weeks of working out I love it.
In my eyes its designed to work on both Tablets and computers. I only use on laptop so once I worked out you go to the normal desktop all was good. The apps just dont work practically for a computer situation. Take up the whole screen and nothing left for anything else.
Just backed up my PC. Might be going to give it a crack I think.

Absolutely agree, user error, didn't realise I needed a recovery cd, no one told me I couldn't recover or reset the password without it, unlike 7 etc.
Indie switch it out of tablet mode but it still didn't look like all the other Windows versions I have used. Plus none of my machines had a fast enough processor, but that didn't stop MS from bombarding me with upgrade now messages that I stopped but kept coming back. As for apple its absolutely not for me. When Ipads first came out I brought one to see if I liked apple products having been a windows user all my life. I was needed a new ph and computer in the near future so the ipad was a test. It completely turned me off there products and I will never buy another apple bit of software again. There hardware mostly good although a little limiting. But there OS I cant stand.
I got my wife to buy it for me in Hong Kong as you cant buy the 3G ones in China where we are currently living. So she gets home from her trip, im all excited to start playing with my new toy. Get it out of the box and cant even turn it on until you sync with Itunes. I have never used itunes in my life and never intended to. After messing around couldn't work out any other way to turn it on so had to let it sit on the table for the 2 hours it took to down load Itunes on our slow china internet. I was hopeing the Ipad would be a short term replacement for a laptop for say a week at a time while traveling as I do a lot of traveling.
It has to be the most un user friendly thing I have ever owned. Trying to simply copy files to it you couldn't. There is no USB support and no way of getting simple things like a PDF to it. My Apple friends said just email it. Other than being a stupid way to send a file to a device that is sitting next to another it was too big to email. I also thought I would get a bluetooth headset so I could use skype. Then find out there bluetooth only works with keyboards and nothing else. There is no file system everything is just plastered on the desk top.
So then learn about Jailbreaking. Jail broke it and things got easier. Could then plug in USB's, it had a file system and things started to be more usable. Problem then is apple force you to update OS every week and the jail breakers cant keep up. So now the only use I have for it is to amuse my 3 year old sometimes. But even then we tried to load movies onto it for a long haul flight recently and couldn't do that.
Anyway that's my rant on Apple. I think if you are going to buy a new apple computer just be prepared to buy a new ph, tablet, tv. No idea where it stops. But if everything is not apple nothing will work.

Wow that totally blows me away. I have a Asus Zenbook Ultra book which I love because its so small and light its great for traveling. Only problem is its only got a 256gb SSD which is often full and I have to move stuff to a storage drive. Looking around at new computers recently 3 years on from when I brought this the storage space just hasn't increased as much as it should have. Im told its because every one stores stuff on the cloud. For apple it is obviously a way to keep track of piracy. For me the cloud makes no sense. I dont always have internet when traveling for a start. Or its so bad getting emails is hard enough. If the cloud is the key to storage then you need a super fast internet connection all the time for it to be an option. What do you do with your 3-4 GB FPV videos after every flight. Certainly not practical to stream. Would be hours of uploading / downloading for minutes of footage for me. Then not available when traveling.
So what do you do with Apple Music if you want to listern to some music on a plane? Looks like apple wont let you. Nice of them to rule your life like that. :-)

At home we've had two iPads and two different android tablets. The android tablets have both required various bouts of dicking around with and even then seem to just be generally flaky. The iPads have been almost entirely trouble-free. At work it's a similar story, we have clinicians with iPads and others with various android devices. The android devices are flaky but a bit more flexible.
So I can see why some people prefer Apple stuff even if I'm not a total convert. My phone is android and my desktop computers and servers are mostly windows though we also run some Linux servers.
I'm honestly quite ambivalent as to what OS or device I'm using, all of them seem to generally work ok but Apple's less open system is inevitably going to produce greater reliability at the cost of decreased flexibility. It's a clear choice. Stating that it's just all about image or whatever betrays a lack of understanding as to their popularity.
I rarely wade into OSX vs Windows debates, largely because I think people have already made up their minds about which side they're going to support and anyone with an alternate opinion just gets pigeon holed into the "they're wrong" box; I think Windows advocates have an opinion of Apple users that isn't always justified though. I use Apple products and have done so for five years or so, I do so because I like the level of integration between them and as a systems developer I appreciate the Unix-like environment of OSX which lets me easily manage the networks of equipment I oversee and presents me with a development environment I can code and deploy efficiently in. OSX also seems to augment it's working environment more around the human instead of the operating system, a good example being scrolling which took Windows a while to realise people should navigate the screen in relation to the content rather than the scroll bar.
While I agree that IOS hardware is locked in, OSX hardware is not at all. I can find more stuff I need to do my job in OSX than I can in Windows, but the RC side of things is very different and I need to keep machines handy I can use the odd app in for configuring flight controllers and stuff. For a while I did part design in Solidworks and after all the agro of working with the Windows UX moved across to Fusion360 on the Mac which is a breath of fresh air. A lot of the opinions of OSX stem from the pre-BSD days where a lot of stuff wasn't configurable and software was very buggy (we used to say Macintosh stood for Most Applications Crash If Not The Operating System Hangs!). Nowadays the UX is very different and everything in OSX can be tweaked, however unlike Windows which has a good depth of configurability through UI, OSX has only the easy / quick to configure stuff in the UI and the rest through command line tweaks. OSX will let you install from non third-party sources easily with a good warning system to determine whether the content is signed or not.
I have both Android and IOS (again, Android purely for configuring and managing some RC stuff) and what I like about the IOS kit is how integrated it is with the Desktop. Apple decided that people want great integration between mobile and desktop but that the UX should be different between the two, because the input mechanisms are different, the real estate is different and overall the use cases are different too, this really works. What I mean is for example I can receive a text message (SMS) on my mobile and can read & reply to that message on my desktop, Google has attempted this with hangouts but this is confusing because certain messages can be seen and replied to across devices but not others. Likewise, pictures and video taken on the iPhone can be picked up on any desktop which is cool but doesn't work quite fast enough leading to a bit of annoyance. As I say, Apple has managed a good level of integration without enforcing that you work the same way across devices. Apple music hasn't deleted my music library and I regularly purchase and download music destined for foriegn devices like my car, there's bits of iTunes that's annoying like rentals only working on the device you rented them from but generally their policy of family sharing and content management is pretty good.
The hardware itself is great, and the after care support is second to none. I've had a stuck pixel in a Macbook replaced with no quibble at all in less than an hour and if the missus' says she can't do something I send her to the Apple store for free training rather than having to spend any of my precious little patience showing her.
I'm sure people have similar views of PC-based and Android-based vendors and that's great, because competition keeps them on their toes; personally though coming from the Windows / Android world into ther IOS / OSX world I'm far happier with the latter.
iPeel that makes a lot of sense to me as a user. It was explained to me by a Apple Genius that Aple believes that bluetooth is not secure so only has it on the iPad and iPhone to allow connection with Android gear and car radios for example, providing Air Drop as a quicker and more secure system.
If only the computer savvy, tech experts, etc etc could understand the fear that we non tech savvy users have of doing something like the free upgrade to 10. I lost 60% of the content of the laptop when I reverted back to 7. The MS testing firmware told me that the laptop would run 10, it did but only just. So obviously there must be an ideal specification that makes 10 work smooth and fast. I did a bit of research and found a list of the programs that 10 either dumps in the upgrade or removes completely, which it did, media player being one.
I understand that one day I will have to change, but I still have an old machine running XP OK :)

I tried to upgrade from Windows 7 and it failed. Unfortunately during the process Windows detected that my copy of Win 7 was not totally kosher so it needed to be activated and gave me 7 days to do it. In the end I bought a new install of Win 10 and it works fine. A few grumbles but by the time you have unticked all the privacy boxes and got rid of much of the stupid bloatware it behaves much like Win 7 but without the need, so far, for any additional anti-virus software. One really good thing is that it starts up and shuts down very quickly. It is so quick I have changed habits and now shut it down if I am going to be away from the PC for more than a few hours. Happy so far, on balance.

I too have succumbed to temptation and upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 Home.
IMO it's just another Microsoft 'con' - an even fancier shop window, still with Windows 7 hidden away underneath. I find it a bit disappointing - I was hoping I could easily run live apps like BBC Weather and News that run so easily on my Android phone. Looking at the Microsoft Store - first impressions is that it doesn't want to have anything to do with a non-Microsoft app.
Does my PC run any faster? I don't feel it does.
Is the overall system easier to use ? Not really, again Microsoft has just moved access to all the background options and settings around - so you have to learn where they are all over again!
I expected to be able to have lots of free Apps to install - as per the Google Play Android store.
It's funny, I can remember when Windows 7 came out and people were complaining that it didn't look like Windows XP. And when that came out, they liked Windows 98:SE better, or Windows 2000 Professional. Before that, Windows 95 got whinged about because they ditched Program Manager for the Start Menu ...

Best feature in Windows 10? Virtual desktops by default. It's not new, but it is new to Windows 10 in that it's easily accessible to the lay person now.
Win+Tab, "New Desktop" ... Ctrl+Win+Left/Right arrow to flick between the new desktops. Soooo much nicer than the older crappier VDesktop features. It actually handles window placement properly making skiving really easy :) Er, I mean - increasing productivity... Win+Tab is a better task + desktop switcher than Alt+Tab too.

That's exactly the kind of explanation a pro in any field would be expected to give. Personally I would never use, what was it, Win+Tab + ?????????. See what I mean, us mere mortals aren't interested in re learning what it's taken 8 years to get to know. It's like me trying to explain an unvented G3 pressurised hot water system and drainage to a Victorian Sewer Worker.
And yet you're planning on moving to a completely new OS instead of a vaguely familiar one.
Windows 10 is no different to buying a slightly different kettle. They do the same jobs as the old models but you're basically attached to the one with the red LED instead of the new one that glows blue.
People always resist change - of course it's worse to you, you're unfamiliar with it. Once you become familiar with it, the old way becomes .. obsolete.
Hassle Hassle Hassle us older folks need a pc that i can talk to, and tell it to get my apps to work and let it sort its own problems out ;D

Yes it is free but no good if your programs and processor and video card aren't top notch. Then it costs you a new computer to be modern. IMHO a Mac is for dummies, graphics, music and video people.

Another reason I forgot to put.
If I wanted windows to feel like a smartphone or tablet I'd buy one.
An os on a pc should be just that not an app based feel / look.
I have a phone to run apps on.
I'm never going to buy a windows phone so app compatibility isn't ever going to be there.
I don't have a touch screen monitor function that is wasted lol.
Driver compatibility - just when you start getting drivers that work on your current windows they bring out another os.
If we were all the same it would be a small world.

Yes it is free but no good if your programs and processor and video card aren't top notch. Then it costs you a new computer to be modern. IMHO a Mac is for dummies, graphics, music and video people.

I run Windows 10 on a laptop that cost me £159 from Tescos .. it's not the fastest but then again I wouldn't pay only £159 for a laptop to do proper work / tasks on. It's for faffing around.
And a Mac is going to set you back a LOT more than a decent PC.

Well each to there own and the debates can go on as long as everyone if the world has there own brain. Thats a good thing by the way.
Everyone fears change. I am no different. After the first page of comments I upgraded and its been fine. I am liking it better than win8 at this point. the full app screen in that never worked for me.
The problem with all these things, windoze, Mac, Iphones, Android is we only really use maybe 10% of the functions and ability of the device. I made an effort with my last phone to look up the best tips for using it. Do it all the time now. Found a vid on the first 5 things to do after upgrading to win10. Learning 1 new trick can make life and the OS (no matter which one) So much nicer to use.
Cant remember what it was but learnt a shortcut about win8 after using it for 3 years that saved me 4,5 sometime 6 steps to finding files. Use it 10 times a day maybe. Add all those clicks up over 3 years. Its worth learning how all these things work properly.

Last year I bought one of those little Hi8 dual android/win tablets that where popular on here so as to run Mission Planner without lugging the laptop about. However as said earlier I managed to lock myself out of windows as I didnt make a recovery disc or whatever. So I now need to do a complete reinstall of windows 10 but cannot get past the first log in page. I want to get this tablet working as I want to sell it PDQ as I dont want to fly Multi Copters any longer. Any ideas from you experts as to the way forward please?

I did not put any password or details in, it was some knob at the flying site being clever. I have tried that reset but I dont know enough for it to work. I have tried too many times on the tablet and now win 10 wont even let the keyboard work, is it some kind of extra security? The Android side works fine.
I have absolutely no idea - but I think this is probably not the fault of Windows 10. I mean I could lock myself out of my laptop if I wanted to by asking someone to change my password for me and not tell me. I could even do it to my bank account - shall I change banks?
I know its not directly a Win10 issue, but it must be possible to get into this some how. I bet the police could! It wont even connect to the PC, cant even switch it back to Android now.

I have handed the Chuwi Hi8 over to a proper computer man to sort out, he said it would be simple, just a matter of doing a fresh install of Win 10 he said, I have all the proper gear to do that he said. Oh and I will need the ms account that was used to set up the password. Eejit, if I anyone knew that I would have been able to,do,it myself. Grrrrrrrr!!!
How about I give it to the police and tell them I suspect there's naughty stuff in the memory, bet they could get in to it tout suite

Yep been using a week or so now and like it better than 8.1. everything seems to be working.
One interesting thing I had to free up space on C drive to do the upgrade as only had 3gb left and needed 5 or something. After the upgrade I had 11gb free and thats with not deleting the 8.1 temp old backup file.
So now its done a update and it very quickly is back to 5gb free again.
Will leave it the 28 days till it deletes the windowsold.wim file and see how its looking. Might have to see if liftoff wants to move to another drive as thats taken the next largest amount of space.

Is 3 years old. Ready for upgrade but struggling to find something suitable. The ultrabook is very nice and light to carry around but none of the new ones seem to have much more hdd space. Really need to go 4x I think as 256 is just not enough.
Speed wise it seems ok. Does struggle with liftoff a bit. Haybales works ok but bit slow through the forest :-)
See that was the point I was making earlier, you have an i7 processor, earlier processors struggle with 10, well mine do!

Runs fairly good. Just liftoff is marginal other than one level. Runs phoenix perfectly and the graphics on that seem easy as good.

I found a mate who is very good with Microsoft stuff and handed my Chuwi tablet over to him to sort out. Eventually he cracked the little bugger and installed new google Android and a new Windows 10. On return to me he had not put in any info, user name etc etc. I booted it up and of course Mrs BigT said she would like to have it so put her name in as user but no password, no MS account, she only wants it for FaceAche or some such nonsense. So today she turned it on and we connected to the WiFi at home, no problem, and ever since then its been dong update after update after update. Its been re charged twice so far. So here is the question: I want to create a Password Reset for it but it only has a micro sd slot and a very small USB port. I can find no instructions anywhere on how to do this for a tablet. None of the you tube demos are for a tablet. There must be a different layout for a tablet as the desktop looks more like a cross between an Android phone and an iPhone. When I search for user accounts I get the page with user accounts on but the link that should be on the left panel to take me to create password etc is not there. Now, is this because we have not password protected the tablet?

That's because it's Windows 10. It's functionally the same - click the windows icon, you have a menu. From there, you can launch your apps.
With Windows 8 they did away with the start menu. Now it's back because it worked better than the full screen launcher thing.
This is thing I find confusing, why are programs now called apps? I take it the Windows icon is the 4 squares in the bottom left corner? And where do I find the start menu? Thanks for the help, I won't be using it but I know I am going to get asked later. I don't why I find this so confusing, I picked up 7 so easy and I think there was a lot more info from MS

Yes the "window" icon is the Windows start menu. If you are at all competent with Windows 7 you should find Windows 10 a breeze...

Ok, so, last week I finally got to the point of losing the will to live with my trusty 10 year old PC. After many upgrades and new drives new graphics card and new ram I couldn't live with the lock ups and crashes any longer. So I opened up the piggy bank and built an new PC from scratch. On the advice of my bro in law (senior IT man for Glasgow Uni, who detests MS and Apple by the way) I took the spec from an i7 machine with 2x2TB Ssd,that would retail for about £2500 plus vat and bought the bits from Scan, case and all, from order to delivery 15 hours, from delivery to build completion 3 hours, from build completion to fully working, 48 hours and counting.
This is my first clean fresh install of Windows 10 and, guess what, it's not that bad so far.

I am getting on ok with Win10 too after getting a new laptop.
Only bug i have atm is a printing bug. It always wants to "print to file" and will never send it to the actual printer. Other than that it works pretty well and i am getting used to it.
Still keeping my editing machine on win 7 tho. ;D
Mostly I am happy with 10 after upgrading from 8.
One little thing is I send pics from my ph to pc often using bluetooth. Before it used to just pop up and prompt to save. Now I have to manually click on the bluetooth app tell it to receive a file before I send it from my phone. Small thing just takes a couple more clicks to get the job done.
Apart from that all is working well and like the layout.
Is there any way to still get a free upgrade from XP to ten?
I know you could a while back if you were signed up,but that has now expired.
You can get a win7 installation on eBay for about £15 ish.

Not from XP directly. 10 was to replace 7 and 8 because they were "so bad" so if you dont have either of them you dont qualify.
Windows 7 was ace Coyote, it was Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 (both with the crap UI updates) that were widely hated.
I use Windows 10 exclusively now, the only thing that annoyed the crap out of me were the "toast popups" which got turned off immediately.
Windows 7 was certainly a step in the right direction after the disasterous Vista. Windows 8 was shocking, 8.1 less so and Windows 10 so far has been a good step.
Oddly Microsofts best OS was also almost their undoing as many people were unwilling to upgrade from XP to Vista or even 7 for the longest of times.
Interestingly enough, I probably still do the same old sh*t on my PC that I did 10 years ago, but for some reason I need a bigger, faster processor, more RAM and storage to run a much more bloated OS.
Gone are the heady days of pushing the hardware to the maximum, eeking out every last scrap of storage space from the tape drive buffer and pushing more than 8 sprites to the screen on one go. Oh and who could forget the audio developments of some of the 8 bit computers with only 3 audio channels being somehow pushed to deliver 5!!!! And the games that magically pushed graphics into that no-mans land of a screen border where no developer had ever gone before.
Bring back GEOS!

Completely agree with you there Krikey - you'll know what I'm talking about when I mention web frameworks as well, they've grown into such complex overbearing beasts that even creating a simple website nowadays is no mean feat for a beginner ... I'd hate to be just starting out right now, there's so much to remember.

Can any of you Win 10 experts tell me which versions of Sony Movie Studio or Vegas work with Win 10 please? I cannot get my Movie Studio 9 to open any .AVI or .MOV files as win 10 does not support Quick Time (or the other way round). I get this message
It looks like Apple no longer wants QuickTime to run on Windows.
I have just read that it you need the QuickTime plugin to run it with custom install options.
It does install but may not have full functionality. (according to Apple.)
I haven't installed win 10 so I'll not be much help.
But you could try installing vlc player.
That's will play anything and may install it's own plugin that the editing software might be able to take advantage of.

Apparently the windows movie maker from the 2012 window essentials works with win 10. I'll need to try it and report back. I have had a suggestion that this is a good editing suite. http://www.magix.com/us/movie-edit-pro/

The free upgrade to win10 ends july 29, does anyone know when you update from win7 do you have to reload all your software or does it remain fully working after the update?
The preinstalled software for the most part should stay where it is, as the upgrade is not a clean install but it upgrades/overwrites the Windows OS elements on the Hard Drive.
Having said that, you may have software that won't work or disappear so you're best to check with the software provider before upgrading.
Also check to see if your motherboard and processor are up to it as well.
I've had the new computer up and running for 2 weeks now and apart from a few bugs and having to think where I have put files everything seems smooth enough. Some annoying bugs that I cannot stop which seem common at the moment are, task bar won't auto hide, despite telling the OS that I don't want to sign in when I wake the computer up it ignores me and makes me sign in, on wake up the home screen locks up and the computer auto reboots, I also hate Outlook, and I cannot get Live Mail to work.
